FREYJA LEE
This incredible Oxfordshire based ceramicist makes work around, and is greatly influenced by, being a mother.
Her current works of drawing, collage and ceramics explore her love of myth, femininity and nostalgia.
"Both my parents and grandparents were artists. Growing up I was surrounded by performing arts and making. At Steiner school I was able to spend whole days knitting and painting and making - the Steiner philosophy was that we were only allowed primary colours which was quite intimidating. It was all about form and block colour. We would re-tell the mythological stories our teacher had told us through our ceramics and other pieces."
"I collaborate with Tilly, a talented potter who hand throws beautiful things that look like they have been washed up from the shore and tumbled in the the sea - they are canvases of beauty. For me to work on them is a continuation of my practice as an artist."
"The clay, shape and form and utility of the object gives the art a whole new dimension. Each vessel and each object has a life of its own."
"My inspiration comes from my experience as a woman and a mother. The experience of becoming a mother and stepping into my womanhood has inspired my creativity. The drawings are made in an emerald mossy green which helps me explore my images and dreams in a single colour. Complementing this with a second colour allows my imagination to float off into a new dimension."
"The pieces come to me in a delicious buttery slip clay and I scribe into it to create the sgraffito designs complemented with glazes."
